Dan Dubowitz’ Civic Works projects collectively explore wastelands and the sustained and seemingly permanent features of modern cities. Dubowitz’s project titles, including “Wastelands,” “Fascismo Abbandonato,” and “After the Occupation” refer to abandoned spaces which, for Dubowitz, reveal as much about their past and present inhabitants as they do the psyche of contemporary societies. As noted by Dubowitz, “It seems that a portion of every city is always a wasteland.” These neglected or abandoned places are fragile and ephemeral, a transient aspect of a changing, living city, yet their development appears unable to clear them away for good.
Dan Dubowitz has exhibited internationally, including the US, England, Germany, Ireland and Italy. He has been the subject of numerous publications, including three books which share the series titles, “Wastelands,” “Fascismo Abbandonato,” and “After the Occupation” in 2010.
Dan Dubowitz' next solo exhibition will be at Bau-Xi Photo in December 2010.
